Tres largas horas. Ese es el tiempo que permaneció cerrado Nasdaq, el segundo mayor mercado de EEUU y la considerada como la bolsa mundial de las tecnológicas. Un problema informático obligó a paralizar las cotizaciones de más de 3.200 empresas, con un valor bursátil conjunto superior a los 5 Billones de dólares.

El misterioso evento, sin precedentes por su duración y alcance, está siendo objeto de investigación por parte del supervisor SEC. El apagón mantuvo en vilo a las decenas de miles de inversores de todo el mundo que operan  cada día en este afamado mercado tecnológico. Los principales afectados han sido los operadores intradía y los denominados ‘fondos robot’ (HFT o operadores de alta frecuencia) que compran y vende a cada segundo de sesión.

Según la versión oficial de Nasdaq, citada en la prensa estadounidense, un fallo en el sistema de seguridad que difunde las cotizaciones en tiempo real provocó problemas en algunos derivados sobre acciones y obligó a cerrar la bolsa en su totalidad. Las acciones de Nasdaq OMX, la sociedad privada que gestiona el mercado, se dejaron iun 3,6%, en previsión de que el evento genere repercusiones legales para la empresa.

El problema, de gran magnitud, desató especulaciones de todo tipo que perdieron peso al permanecer abierto el NYSE, la tradicional Bolsa de Nueva York en la que cotizan los valores más tradicionales. Sin embargo, compañías del tamaño de Google, Apple, Intel o Facebook, entre otras, se vieron afectadas directamente por el apagón y por la imposibilidad de comprar o vender sus acciones.

El último incidente de gravedad en el Nasdaq se produjo en mayo de 2012 con motivo de la salida a bolsa de Facebook, que bloqueó el sistema de órdenes por la afluencia masiva de compradores y vendedores. No obstante, en aquella ocasión afectó solamente a una empresa y a un número limitado de inversores. Esta vez, los afectados han sido todos los valores del Nasdaq y todos sus inversores.
