La periodista Gómez Borrero, quizás la única vaticanista española, publica un libro recopilando la historia que llevó a Francisco al Vaticano tras Benedicto XVI.

En España hay pocos vaticanistas, o ninguno. No sirve solo haber sido corresponsal en Roma durante unos años. Cuesta, pues, encontrar a alguien que conozca los entresijos y tenga fuentes fiables en el Vaticano. Tampoco hay un gran medio de comunicación (al margen de las delegaciones de las agencias) dedicado en exclusiva a ello, pese a que hay intentos a derecha e izquierda.

Hay un periodista que sobresale por encima del resto, quizás porque, aún sin renunciar a su país, se ha convertido en un romano más. No tenemos ni a Magister ni a Tornielli, por ejemplo, pero sí a Paloma Gómez Borrero, que acaba de publicar el libro ‘De Benedicto a Francisco. El cónclave del cambio’.

Tal y como me confirmó recientemente, a su paso por Barcelona, el libro -de apenas 184 páginas- está escrito a toda prisa porque la editorial (Planeta) “lo quería ya”. Así, poca historia del pontificado de Francisco se cuenta; apenas el detalle del cónclave que, por otro lado, es secreto bajo excomunión para cardenales y personal de la Santa Sede que participan en él.

Una renuncia no tan espontánea

Gómez Borrero dedica gran parte del libro a la memoria del Papa emérito -desde 1415 ningún Papa había renunciado-, sin olvidar los últimos días de Juan Pablo II. Si este fue un Papa viajero, aquel fue (es) un intelectual. Y esta es una manera de definir y distinguir entre obispos de Roma algo particular, pues no hay Papa que no tenga la maleta a punto, ni pontificado sin encíclica.

El peor trago con el que se desayuna todos los días el Papa Francisco es la herencia en forma de ‘relatio’, cuyas tapas dicen son rojas, que dejó bajo llave Benedicto XVI. La periodista está convencida de que el ‘caso Vatileaks’, el escándalo del Instituto para las Obras de Religión (o ‘Banco del Vaticano’) y la pederastia que ha golpeado a la Iglesia católica han podido con las fuerzas del que fuera cardenal Joseph Ratzinger.

Benedicto XVI no ha necesitado para renunciar la voz del cardenal Benedetto Caetani escondido tras la pared de su dormitorio. El anuncio, que solo fue captado en un primer momento por la periodista Giovanna Chirri, de la agencia ANSA, gracias a su sobresaliente en latín en el colegio, había sido comunicado previamente solo al cardenal Angelo Sodano y a un tal Georg Ratzinger.

Algunos canonistas también podrían haber sido consultados discretamente sobre la situación legal que se daría (tratamiento, modo de vida, dónde viviría, con qué título…) si un Papa renunciase, pero sin haber tenido la confirmación de que la decisión ya estaba tomada. Es decir, si a estos detalles se le suman otros, como el de visitar en abril de 2009 la ciudad de L’Aquila (Italia), afectada por un terremoto, y depositar el palio (recibido en su investidura) a las puertas del templo donde reposan los restos de Celestino V, un Papa que… renunció (en el siglo XII), para Gómez Borrero, no cabe duda, el paso al lado de Benedicto XVI “no fue tan espontáneo ni imprevisto”.

“No será blando a la hora de tomar las decisiones”

En el libro de la experimentada periodista -toda una vida como corresponsal en Roma para la cadena Cope, y ahora colaboradora en tres televisiones de América del Sur y en 13 Tv, para España- se pueden leer distintos pasajes y anécdotas vividas en primera persona. También, la manera en que la suerte (o el Espíritu Santo) puede influir en un reportero.

En 1978, Gómez Borrero pudo haber entrevistado al cardenal Albino Luciani solo unas horas antes de convertirse en Juan Pablo I. “No le moleste, porque no es papable”. Todavía se arrepiente de haber perdido “la entrevista del siglo”. Acertó, sin embargo, en la auténtica ruleta con el nombre del sucesor de Juan Pablo II.

En 2013, al quinto escrutinio, el cardenal Jorge Bergoglio se convirtió en Papa Francisco. El primer americano y el primer jesuita. Gómez Borrero asegura que es un Sumo Pontífice con “energía”, que “no será blando a la hora de tomar las decisiones”, pese a las apariencias y las formas, y está convencida de que la reforma que la curia necesita es inminente. Características que no tienen que ir reñidas con la “sencillez” y la “austeridad”.
