El instituto australiano de estadística ha desarrollado un juego de simulación política basado en la toma de decisiones. Nada que no hayamos visto hasta ahora salvo por un detalle: utiliza los datos reales del censo y nos obliga a fijarnos en la opinión de los ciudadanos afectados antes de ejecutar ninguna medida.

Soy el primero que ha hecho bromitas diciendo que a Mariano Rajoy le hacían falta tres o cuatro partidas a un buen SimCity para hacer los experimentos con gaseosa antes de andar jugando con las tijeritas, pero pensándolo mejor, SimCity no es España. Reproducir con este juego una ciudad parecida a cualquier otra en forma, en población y en números es una tarea poco menos que imposible.

No es una crítica. No creo que el simulador político de Maxis necesite datos reales, qué va, siempre ha funcionado estupendamente funcionando con sus propias normas y acercándose a la realidad en su justa medida. Lo que digo es que el juego sería más amable de la cuenta con el presidente del Gobierno.

Pero tampoco voy a negar que trabajar con datos reales no sea una idea atractiva. Por eso me ha llamado tanto la atención Run That Town, un juego para iPhone (sí, sólo para iPhone, qué le vamos a hacer) desarrollado por el Australian Bureau of Statistics que nos pone al mando de cualquier ciudad australiana utilizando los datos reales del censo.

“Run That Town consiste en tomar decisiones para hacer a la gente lo más feliz posible. Si todo eso te suena a concurso de popularidad, pues… bueno, bienvenido a la política”. El juego se presenta soltándole esa pullita a la clase política y, acto seguido, coloca un letrero aclarando que muchas de las situaciones que se darán durante la partida son ficticias, exageradas y humorísticas. Lo que no es ficticio son los nombres de las ciudades y sus datos demográficos. Nada más comenzar elegimos un código postal y una ciudad, recibimos una breve explicación de las reglas del juego y nos ponemos en marcha.

El juego nos da un mandato de diez años y una ciudad en la que no caemos ni bien ni mal y nuestro objetivo es disparar nuestra popularidad antes de que se acabe nuestro periodo en el poder. Para alcanzar este objetivo, tenemos que revisar todas las propuestas de obras públicas y eventos que nos llegan a la mesa y decidir si las aprobamos o las rechazamos.

Con cada proyecto nos llega una opinión favorable de un ciudadano y otra negativa y, justo al lado, los datos del censo que apoyan a esa opinión. Por ejemplo, si nos proponen construir un gimnasio público, nos mostrarán qué sectores de la población están a favor, cuáles están en contra y por qué motivos. En función de esas posturas, tendremos que tomar una decisión.

Una vez hemos decidido qué vamos a construir/organizar/aprobar, el proyecto se pone en marcha (pagando previamente en dinero y ‘favores’) y tarda un tiempo en terminarse. Cuando ya está acabado, nos da beneficios económicos, nos exige unos gastos y nos da o nos resta influencia sobre los ciudadanos y las instituciones. Cuanto más expandimos la ciudad, más problemas surgen (desde socavones en plena calle hasta gorrinerías en la piscina pública), que tenemos que solventar también tirando de billetera y de carisma.

El funcionamiento es bastante sencillo y tampoco da para jugar durante horas, pero el ‘INE aussie’ ha conseguido que las propuestas tengan grises y que las medidas que funcionan como un tiro en una ciudad, en otras no sirva para absolutamente nada. Consigue obligarte a interpretar los datos del censo y a pensarlo bien antes de tomar cualquier decisión. Y eso ya tiene bastante mérito.

El juego forma parte de una campaña de la propia institución australiana para concienciar de la utilización de sus datos. El mensaje que quieren transmitir es que los estudios que elaboran son los pilares sobre los que se apoyan las decisiones políticas. Y han conseguido traducir ese mensaje perfectamente al lenguaje de las mecánicas del juego. Run That Town se hace entender como solo un videojuego puede hacerlo.

De la mano con el juego, lanzaron una aplicación web que te pide datos personales y te ofrece datos sobre el lugar que ocupas en el censo. Todo con una presentación estupenda, una voz en off divertida y más de un dato curioso. Os invito a entrar, inventaros un alter ego australiano y a pensar en lo bonito que sería que nuestro Instituto Nacional de Estadística hiciera cosas así.
